Maybe it’s because David Byrne’s Luaka Bop came into existence in the form of a mix tape that it has successfully negotiated a millennial transition and two actual decades with more than its share of innovative panache. The mix tape was the musical selection you circulated to your friends. They played it to other people who copied it and so on and so forth. It was the original ‘viral’ dissemination of music. You could criss-cross continents and mismatch cities. It was a place you could take liberties with stuff you’d picked up here and there, some popular, some rare, some obscure. The essence of that era clearly exist on this 21st birthday compilation which confidently kicks off with Jorge Ben and Shuggie Otis before sliding into DB’s Fuzzy Freaky and a host of swing infused funky pop tinged gems. Overall, Brazil’s presence is gloriously diverse, Moussa Doumbia meets James Brown, Irakere’s Bacalao Con Pan lights a blazing fire beneath the clave and Jim White drifts along simply and sweetly. The combination of David Byrne and label head honcho Yale Evelev has proved a winner on all fronts and one can be sure that there’s a whole generation of music aficionados out there who would love to emulate the sweet sense of risk mixed with a casual but feisty confidence that these guys exude when it comes to selecting their releases.
