Celebrating 21 years in 2009, the widely respected Luaka Bop label was founded by David Byrne and is characterised by its particularly eclectic output and the way it has released international pop music while avoiding the freighted ‘world music’ tag. The label’s debut release was the pioneering Brazilian compilation Beleza Tropical, which went on to sell over 350,000 copies. Whether signing artists who are completely unknown or neglected (Jim White, Tom Zé) or reviving cult classics (Shuggie Otis, Os Mutantes) Luaka Bop has retained an open, independent spirit with a very acute ear for new, experimental music in any genre, from the Brazilian avant garde (Moreno + 2) to the indie underground (Terror Pigeon Dance Revolt).
